Socio-Economic Effects of Prolonged Road Construction on Business Performance, Urban Mobility, and Livelihoods in Sabon Tasha Community, Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State

Abstract

This study examined the socio-economic effects of prolonged road construction on business performance, urban mobility, and livelihoods in Sabon Tasha Community, Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria. The study focused on the effects of prolonged road construction on shop owners, private motorists, commercial drivers, motorcycle riders, and tricycle operators. A descriptive survey design was adopted. Data were collected from 400 respondents using structured questionnaires, out of which 396 (99%) were successfully retrieved and analyzed. Secondary data were obtained from relevant government publications and literature. Data were analyzed using frequencies and percentages. The findings showed that 54% of the respondents experienced a decline in customer patronage, 48% reported reduced business revenue, 49% experienced longer travel times, while 47% reported increased transportation costs and reduced household income. Overall, the study found that prolonged road construction negatively affected business activities, transportation, and the livelihoods of residents in the study area. The study concludes that delays in road construction create significant economic and social challenges for affected communities. It recommends timely completion of road projects, adequate funding, effective supervision, proper traffic management, and the provision of alternative access roads to reduce the negative effects on businesses and road users.
