Biography

Mohammad Abba Usman is an emerging researcher, academic, and construction professional in the field of Building and Construction Technology, with research interests centred on sustainable construction materials, concrete technology, supplementary cementitious materials, and the development of environmentally responsible approaches to construction. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Construction Technology at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, following the completion of his M.Tech. in Construction Technology in 2025 and B.Tech. in Building in 2015 from the same institution.
He is a full-time Lecturer in the Building Technology field at the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa, where he has contributed to teaching and academic development since 2016. His academic experience encompasses building construction technology, structural theory, soil mechanics, building services, site management, building science, engineering geology, structural mechanics, and technical report writing. He also serves as Project Coordinator in the Building Technology Department and contributes to research and academic activities within the School of Environmental Studies.
His research focuses on the sustainable utilisation of agricultural and industrial by-products as supplementary cementitious materials, particularly rice husk ash, fly ash, millet husk ash, and palm oil fuel, with applications in self-compacting and conventional concrete. His work investigates their influence on workability, setting characteristics, strength development, mechanical performance, durability, and the broader sustainability of cement-based construction materials. He has presented his research at the School of Environmental Technology International Conference (SETIC) and has published research on the mechanical and durability performance of rice husk ash-based concrete.
Mr. Usman is a Corporate Member of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Public Diplomacy and Management. His academic and professional activities reflect a growing commitment to advancing sustainable construction through applied research, academic collaboration, and the responsible utilisation of locally available materials.

SELF-COMPACTING CONCRETE WITH FLY ASH AND CALCIUM CARBIDE WASTE: BINDER CHEMISTRY, WORKABILITY, AND STRENGTH

Mohammad Abba Usman*, Umar Danazumi Yusuf, Yahaya Bahago

The incorporation of industrial by-products into cementitious materials can reduce Portland cement consumption and improve resource efficiency. This study investigated fly ash (FA) and calcium carbide waste (CCW) as partial replacements for Portland cement (PC) in self-compacting concrete (SCC). Eleven mixtures were produced, comprising a control a...
